Baton Rouge’s Environmental Specialties International, which provides containment materials used by the oil and gas industry in fracking, has acquired Patriot Environmental of Oklahoma.
The acquisition is designed to meet growing demand for ESI’s products in the Permian Basin oil and gas formation in Texas. Founded in 2012, Patriot has offices in Odessa, Texas and Meeker, Oklahoma. Both companies provide geosynthetic lining materials for water containment.
Founded in 1996, Environmental Specialties International has about 400 employees across the country, according to its website. Its headquarters are at Pecue Lane near Airline Highway in south Baton Rouge. The company has installed 2.5 billion square feet of geosynthetic materials, working on more than 2,000 projects in all 50 states.
ESI also fabricates, installs and provides design service support for high-density polyethylene plastic pipe systems used for the supply/drainage of water, leachate and gas for the solid waste, petrochemical and industrial applications.
ESI President Mark Dillon says Patriot’s culture will be a good fit for the company. “Patriot’s sustained performance and exceptional relationships with customers are what attracted us to them,” he said in a statement. “We look forward to helping Patriot increase the value it provides to the oil and gas industry.”
Water containment, especially in areas where water is a scarce resource, is critical for horizontal fracking in the exploration and production of oil and gas. Whether it is for freshwater or recycled produced water, special containment systems referred to as pits or impoundments are built to manage the water. These impoundments are engineered systems featuring geosynthetic liners with leak protection.
Geosynthetic lining materials are also used for reserve pits and secondary containment applications, while HDPE piping systems are used for the transportation of the water supporting production.
