Oil and gas giant ExxonMobil purchased the site of a former funeral home off Scenic Highway in north Baton Rouge last week.
ExxonMobil bought more than 10 lots for $350,000, according to the deal filed with the East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court’s office. Rhodes United Fidelity Funeral Home was listed as the seller.
Rhodes acquired the property in the ‘70s as part of its expansion into the Capital Region from New Orleans. It’s unclear when the business closed—the website still lists the funeral home despite the land being cleared.
ExxonMobil has not disclosed any plans for the property.
“Over the course of more than 30 years, ExxonMobil has voluntarily purchased property around the Baton Rouge complex,” says Rory Denicola, a spokesperson with ExxonMobil in Baton Rouge. “We purchase abandoned properties as they come available as well as properties sold by interested owners.”
The property is located roughly a half-mile from the complex.
Last month, ExxonMobil announced that a $230.5 million, three-year modernization initiative at its aging north Baton Rouge refinery had been completed.
