A renewed national focus on reducing carbon pollution has several Louisiana businesses searching for ways to capture and permanently store the emissions in deep underground saltwater aquifers, report NOLA.com.
It’s appearing more likely that Louisiana will become a hub for “carbon capture,” which will require service companies to drill wells deep underground for storage. That could mean work for oil and gas businesses.
The process is a focus of Gov. John Bel Edwards’ year-old Climate Initiatives Task Force, which is trying to reduce emissions in all the state’s economic sectors. It’s also a target for the state’s Department of Natural Resources, which wants to be responsible for regulation of underground injection wells used for carbon sequestration as opposed to just the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.
