U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy has joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers in introducing the nation’s first comprehensive carbon dioxide infrastructure package, which could make Louisiana a national hub for carbon capture and sequestration.
The Storing CO2 And Lowering Emissions (SCALE) Act would help develop CCS infrastructure as a critical means of reducing emissions of CO2. The bill would support the buildout of infrastructure to transport CO2 from the sites of capture to locations where it can be either utilized in manufacturing or sequestered safely and securely underground.
Louisiana already has two critical pieces in place to become a significant national hub for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) – a sizable industrial base that would benefit economically from CCS options to help manage its carbon emissions, and large-scale geologic storage opportunities with potential for total storage.
